Palm Oil Hair Deep Conditioner

Palm oil (the one you use in preparing ampesi) is one of the cheapest oils on the Ghanaian market. This oil is obtained from the fruit of the palm tree. The palm fruit can be used in the preparation of soups eg abe kwan (palmnut soup).
After using mango and yogurt deep conditioners, I searched for another home grown recipe for deep conditioning. 
Ata (1974) gives some local names of this oil:
  • Ewe-Dzomi ((literally meaning heated oil) and Amidze (meaning red oil). If you want to know the difference in the two, check here.
  • Fanti Ngo mon
  •  Twi - Abe Ngo  
  •  Ga- Mutsuru 
The preparation of palm oil depends on the quality or grade that has been targeted which is influenced by the technique used in the preparation. For example, the quality of palm oil produced in the factory differs from that of small scale processing. (Read more on www.fao.org and gains.org.gh).

Properties
 The reddish  color comes from high amounts of beta carotene, which the body can convert into vitamin A. Palm oil is rich in antioxidants such as vitamins D and K which are absent in other oils. It also contains lipids and saturated fats that feed the hair shaft, eliminating dryness. This oil, which is an antibacterial oil, is also good for your hair and scalp because it can prevent scalp acne and dry scalp.

Treatments
 Palm oil can be a deep hair-conditioning treatment. Simply apply palm oil to wet hair and put on a shower cap. Rinse after 30 minutes or sleep with the treatment on overnight.     Thanks for posting this. I think this is a great conditioner but it's very very messy and makes for a great prepoo. If you sleep with it, be ready for a red pillow!!

    I love it to seal my ends with. Red palm oil is one of my favs. The sad part is it's expensive as heck here.

Today's post brings out another common herb found easily in the market. It is mainly used in preparing soups and stews and has a very strong sweet aroma.
